  • Socio-political issues and micro-politics in and around organizations, especially in the context of multinational corporations and global value chains
  • Theories of power and political agency in organizations
  • Contemporary standardization-, reorganization- and digitalization- trends in MNCs
  • Political and emotional aspects of organizational sensemaking
  • Actor-centred institutionalism
  • Comparative organizational studies of management, work and employment in the global context
  • Cross-border workers' participation and  industrial relations in MNCs
  • Research on supranational labor representation bodies, esp. European Works Councils
  • Developements in retail and food retail sector
  • Qualitative Research Methods

  • From the beginning of 2021 Mike Geppert and his research team will study the commercialization and privatization of European football clubs. The project is part of the new Special Research Unit (Sonderforschungsbereich 294) of the Universities Jena and Erfurt which takes a broader sociological view of “Structural change of property regimes” and is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). The comparative research project draws on actor-centered institutionalist theories to develop deeper insights into increasing conflicts and power struggles between private owners and other key actors around the question “who owns football”. We will especially look into whether and how national institutional differences influence the owners and other powerful key actors’ strategies to change the ownership structures of clubs in the so-called “big five” European football leagues. Key questions of our study are:
    • 1) what kind of ownership structures can be found in European football clubs and do some of them work against public interests (e.g. undermining fairness in sport);
    • 2) what kind of political strategies do private owners apply to protect their interests and what kind of ownership-related conflicts emerge;
    • 3) are there other powerful key actors who are able to influence the privatization of clubs, and how and why are they able to have a voice?
