Negative attitudes towards immigration: the role of contact and information

Misconceptions about immigration and little personal contact with immigrants can influence attitudes towards immigration. Based on survey data on Thuringia, we investigate the role that the provision of information plays in changing attitudes. Our study provides important findings. Respondents who receive information about the share of immigrants in their region develop a more positive attitude towards immigration. In addition, respondents with below-average contact with immigrants and respondents with major misconceptions react more strongly to the information.
